Although the place where the Colorado River reaches its narrowest point for hundreds of miles had long been recognized as the gateway to California, it wasn't until the Gold Rush of 1849 that Yuma Crossing was permanently settled. Today, thousands flock to the area's RV parks to enjoy the mild, dry winters.
The city's historic sites are headlined by the Yuma Territorial Prison State Park, a fascinating remnant from the days of frontier justice. Nearby, you'll find the Yuma Crossing State Historical Park, which includes the U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot. The Century House Museum in one of Yuma's oldest buildings has artifacts and exhibits on Yuma's pioneer days.

Once an important riverport, you can relive Yuma's steamship days aboard the Colorado King, a double-decker paddlewheel boat. You can also enjoy the river and the surrounding desert, forty miles north of the city, at the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, where hiking, fishing, and boating facilities are available.
On the California side of the Colorado, you'll find the Quechan Indian Museum in what was once a part of Fort Yuma. Exhibits tell of the history of the Quechan people, the Spanish settlement of the area, and the history of Yuma Crossing.
