Wickenburg nearly became the capital of Arizona at the height of the gold rush of the 1860s. At the time it was the state's third largest city, with some 80 gold mines in the near vicinity. Much of the city's dusty Old West flavor is maintained in its colorful downtown. Look for the mesquite tree that served as a jail where lawmen simply chained their charges. Numerous dude ranches in the area add to the western cowboy feeling. Be sure to visit the excellent Desert Caballeros Western Museum for dioramas of the early city, a large collection of Western-themed paintings, and artifacts of the pioneers. Nearby, you'll find many ghost towns and abandoned gold mines. The Vulture Mine, where Henry Wickenburg started the gold rush by picking a nugget up off the ground, is south of the city. To the north, you can see the few remaining buildings at Stanton. Robson's Mining World offers a large collection of preserved mine buildings and equipment that were moved from other sites. At the Hassayampa River Preserve, operated by The Nature Conservancy, you can explore a rare willow-cottonwood forest in one of state's last riparian habitats.
