The cool forests and 5,000-foot elevation make a comforting respite from the desert heat of Phoenix's Valley of the Sun. Many city residents head to Payson for hunting, fishing, and hiking in the surrounding Tonto National Forest. You can visit the world's largest travertine bridge -- up to 400 feet wide and spanning 150 feet -- at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. Payson also offers the Rim Country Museum, which displays pioneer, Native American, and mining artifacts. On the grounds, the Zane Grey Cabin is a replica of the hunting lodge the novelist built on the Mogollon Rim, which towers over the landscape to the north.
