Once a mill and farming town on the banks of the Salt River, today Tempe is part of the urban sprawl of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area and the home of Arizona State University. The city's name is not of Native American origin but is taken from the Vale of Tempe in Greece. The home of the city's founder, merchant Charles Hayden who set up shop here in 1872, can still be seen on Mill Avenue-it's now a restaurant called Monti's Casa Vieja. The Arizona Historical Society Museum has hands-on displays, films and exhibits including a frontier saloon and general store. On the university campus, you can visit the ASU Art Museum in the lovely Nelson Fine Arts Center, and the R.S. Dietz Museum of Geology with its exhibits of gemstones, minerals, and a Foucault pendulum. You can also tour the striking Gammage Auditorium, the last major building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
