Sierra Vista's climate is as nice as the views from town. Established on the slopes of the Huachuca Mountains, Sierra Vista overlooks the San Pedro River Valley.
Numerous day trips can be started from here; the area has mountains, caves, ghost towns, and many historic sites including Fort Huachuca, an army post for more than one hundred years. The fort's museum describes army history in this area, including chapters on conflict with Apaches and training of 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers.
Bird-watchers may know Sierra Vista as "The Hummingbird Capital." Spring migration, late April to early May, is a good time to see many songbirds, but the lowlands around the San Pedro River support many species year-round. The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area has hiking trails. Their information center is 8 mi east of Sierra Vista on Hwy. 90. Several nearby canyons offer good birding and other wildlife viewing, too.
Golfers can pick from three courses, and shoppers will find a mall, art galleries, and antique shops.
Picnickers can find a place to spread out at several local parks. Park facilities also include a swimming pool, team sport areas, and tennis courts.
