You'll probably want to have a car to get around in Bakersfield or to take in the many attractions in the south of the Central Valley. Bakersfield is two hours north of Los Angeles via Interstate 5; if flying into Los Angeles, you'll find all major car rental agencies represented at the airport or elsewhere in the city. If flying into Bakersfield, you'll find four rental car counters at Meadows Field Airport. Getting around in the city is fairly simple if you refer to the numbered east-west streets (First Street, etc.) and the alphabetized north-south streets (A Street, etc.) as general guides. The business district is divided between downtown (roughly in the area of California and Chester Streets, which are the same thing as 12th and J Streets, respectively) and West Bakersfield (west of Freeway 99).
