Car

You'll probably want to have a car to get around in Bakersfield or to take in the many attractions in the south of the Central Valley. Bakersfield is two hours north of Los Angeles via Interstate 5; if flying into Los Angeles, you'll find all major car rental agencies represented at the airport or elsewhere in the city. If flying into Bakersfield, you'll find four rental car counters at Meadows Field Airport. Getting around in the city is fairly simple if you refer to the numbered east-west streets (First Street, etc.) and the alphabetized north-south streets (A Street, etc.) as general guides. The business district is divided between downtown (roughly in the area of California and Chester Streets, which are the same thing as 12th and J Streets, respectively) and West Bakersfield (west of Freeway 99).

Public Transport

Bus:Golden Empire Transit (GET) offers 18 bus routes in Bakersfield at a basic fare of $0.90 with free transfers. Hours of operation are 5:45 AM to 7:15 PM.

Taxi:The city sets the rates, which include a $2.50 drop charge plus $2.50 per mile. While cabs may be hailed in the streets, you'll probably have better luck calling for a pick-up. There are several companies including Yellow (805-325-5041).

Airport

(LAX) Los Angeles International Airport, although two hours away from Bakersfield, is the airport used by the majority of Bakersfield business travelers. Some travelers take commuter flights from LAX to Meadows Field (BFL) in Bakersfield, but most rent a car or choose other ground transportation from Los Angeles. (Note that it is possible to take direct flights into and out of Meadows Field from a number of western and southwestern American cities on regular and commuter carriers. This airport serves approximately 700,000 passengers per year.)

For LAX ground transportation:

Shuttle: The blue-and-yellow van shuttles at LAX run by Express Shuttle (800-427-7483) are more costly than other options, but the private vans, which hold up to seven passengers, operate on request 24 hours daily; the fare is $290 for up to three passengers.

Bus: For $30 per person one way ($50 round trip), Airport Bus of Bakersfield (800-858-5000) makes seven scheduled runs each day between LAX and Bakersfield from 3:30 AM to 8 PM.

Transportation from Meadows Field Airport to downtown Bakersfield:

Check to see if your hotel provides complimentary transportation from the airport.

Taxi: A taxi ride from the airport to downtown or to West Bakersfield will cost about $15.

Bus: The local transit authority's Route 3 bus serves Meadows Field Airport once an hour; the fare is $0.90.
