Bakersfield is the west coast's country music capital, home to the "Bakersfield Sound" made popular by local heroes Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. It's no surprise that country dominates the city's live music scene with many restaurants and hotel lounges featuring live country bands, although they are no substitute for Bakersfield's honky-tonks of old. When top country performers (and some rock & rollers) come to Bakersfield, you're likely to catch them over at Buck Owen's Crystal Palace. This treasure trove of country music memorabilia (including Buck's own 1973 Pontiac, complete with steer-horn hood ornament, mounted behind the bar) is the place to dine, dance, and listen to a great lineup of famous performers. The restored Fox Theater, once a 1930s movie palace, is another Bakersfield venue for rock, country and popular music acts and the occasional classic film. For up-to-date schedules and venue information, consult the Bakersfield Californian, the city's daily newspaper.
