This city at the edge of the Mojave Desert (halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas) has long been a transportation center. Where wagon train and railroad routes once met, three major highways (I-40, I-15, and CA 58) now converge. The many surrounding military installations help support the local economy, and there are brand-name stores. Before visiting the Mojave, stop in at the Mojave Desert Information Center in Baker for maps, permits, and local road conditions. Barstow is the "Hub" of the High Desert, with a variety of interesting sites nearby, including Death Valley, the Mojave National Preserve, and Joshua Tree National Park. North of the city, Rainbow Basin Natural Area offers a splendid array of colorful rock formations. At the Calico Early Man Archaeological Site, you can see tools made by nomadic hunter-gatherers up to 200,000 years ago. A tour of the site includes the small museum and working archaeological digs. You can also visit the restored ghost town of Calico; it includes a general store, schoolhouse, saloon, shops, and a silver mine.
