Long a popular getaway for residents of Los Angeles, Big Bear Lake provides year-round recreational opportunities including skiing, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, golf, hiking, and horseback riding -- all amid magnificent mountain scenery. The near perfect weather at this 7,000-foot altitude has encouraged Caltech to build a solar observatory on the shores of the lake. Bed and breakfasts and numerous resorts with rustic cabins provide plenty of places to spend the night.
When you're not engaged in the wealth of other outdoors activities, you can follow the route of the Gold Fever Trail to several sites that were prominent during the gold rush of 1860-75. Maps of the three-hour, self-guided tour are available at the Big Bear Ranger Station. Jeep tours of the surrounding mountains and boat tours of Big Bear Lake are also available.
