Sam Brannan came north from San Francisco in 1852 and decided he had found the spot to build a health spa to rival Saratoga Springs in New York. Legend has it that one night at a dinner party, a rather drunk Sam Brannan blurted out that he would make this spot "the Calistoga of Sarafornia!" The name stuck, and today Calistoga is a thriving health resort known for its geysers, mineral springs, and mineralized mud baths. Old Faithful Geyser of California erupts approximately every 45 minutes, spewing water 60 to 100 feet high. Like Yellowstone's Old Faithful, it is one of the world's few known regularly erupting geysers. Also of interest in Calistoga is the Petrified Forest, containing petrified redwoods more than six million years old.
