Few sidewalks, no streetlights, and no house numbering helps Carmel (sometimes called Carmel-by-the-Sea) to maintain the bohemian way of life that began with its establishment as an artists' colony in the early 20th century. The natural beauty is outstanding, while interesting boutiques and a plethora of art galleries draw shoppers. Along the beautiful beach in City Park, cypress trees skirt the magnificent white sand. Carmel River State Beach offers a less-crowded white-sand beach and a bird refuge that cormorrants, pelicans, and oystercatchers call home. South of town, the exquisite Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo established in 1771 is the second oldest of the missions established by Franciscan missionary Junipero Serra; it is also his burial place. Nearby, you'll find scenic Point Lobos State Reserve. From Carmel, you can also enter the famous 17-Mile Drive, one of the world's most scenic seaside roads.
