In 1849, General John Bidwell founded Chico next to his 28,000-acre ranch. Today more than 2,000 acres of the ranch are preserved as Bidwell Park, with swimming holes, nature trails, and forests. Nearby is the Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, with its restored 26-room Victorian mansion. Also in town is California State University, Chico, with its museum, art gallery, and cultural and sports events. Chico offers an excellent stopover for half-day excursions to outlying scenic and historic areas.
