This logging town is the place to board the Skunk Train for a scenic day-trip through vast redwood forests to Willits. For the half-day version, disembark after 20 miles at a redwood grove and catch the next train back. Stroll the trails in Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, one of the most extensive gardens in the West, where the rhododendrons are spectacular in April and May. Picturesque Noyo Harbor is port to a working fishing fleet. Enjoy the catch at the cafes and restaurants across the street or take in the world's largest salmon BBQ on the Fourth of July. Charter a fishing boat here or embark upon a whale-watching tour (January through April). At Mac-Kerricher State Park, three miles north, harbor seals frolic on offshore rocks and you might glimpse migrating whales. Search for sea urchins, starfish, and tiny octopuses in the tide pools.
