This atmospheric, former gold-rush town survives as a scenic stop for tourists headed to nearby Yosemite. Mariposa (Spanish for "butterfly") has California's oldest courthouse in continuous use. Built at the height of the gold rush in 1854, it's two-story wooden construction is topped by a square clock tower with a clock brought "round Cape Horn." The displays at the Mariposa Museum and History Center focus on a re-created 1850s street scene; replicas include a schoolhouse, sheriff's office, and apothecary. At the California State Mining and Mineral Museum, you'll find a display of diamonds, gold, and gemstones, a full-scale mine replica, and other models.
