Cannery Row, once the heart of Monterey's sardine industry and the colorful setting of novels by John Steinbeck, is now crowded with tourists, restaurants, and shops. Fisherman's Wharf offers craft and gift shops, boat rides, and restaurants in impeccable natural surroundings. Be sure to visit the state-of-the-art Monterey Bay Aquarium, renowned for its three-story-high tanks housing a living kelp forest and thousands of species of fish and the one-million-gallon Outer Bay exhibit that mimics life in the open ocean. You can save time by making advance reservations. The Dennis the Menace Playground on Lake El Estero provides another delight for the youngsters.
The Monterey State Historic Park encompasses many historic structures including the Stevenson House, California's First Theater, the Custom House, Pacific House, and colonial-era adobe homes. You can also visit the Maritime Museum of Monterey, which includes ship models and rare navigational instruments.
From Monterey, you can enter the famous 17-Mile Drive, one of the world's most scenic seaside roads, which goes southward across the peninsula to Carmel.
