In 1769 Portola's expedition camped beneath a tall redwood, which gives the city its name and which still stands on Palo Alto Avenue, at San Francisquito Creek. Stanford University is on the 8,100-acre "Stanford Farm." The Stanford Memorial Church contains beautiful mosaics from Italy. The Leland Stanford Jr. Museum includes in its vast collection Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities, and the gold spike driven in 1869 to link the first railroad across the continent. The Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery is noted for great paintings, and the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace displays documents on war and peace. From the 285-foot-tall Hoover Tower rings the carillon presented by Belgium in gratitude for Herbert Hoover's relief work after World War I.
