Orange groves made this the nation's wealthiest city in the late 1800s. Some of that affluence is still visible in the ornate Victorian, Italian Renaissance, and mission-style mansions and public buildings. Mission Inn, a remarkable blend of Hispanic architectural styles, includes the St. Francis Chapel with its 250-year-old gold-leaf altar and seven Tiffany windows. The California Citrus State Historic Park features the navel orange trees that made the city famous.
At the University of California Riverside, you can visit the Botanic Gardens, which highlight 3,500 blooming cacti and other dry-climate plants, and the California Museum of Photography, where both contemporary prints and historic photographic equipment are displayed. You can also see vintage aircraft and aviation artifacts at March Field Air Museum.
