Car

Whether you're walking, cycling, or driving, the central city's simple street grid system, with numbered north-south streets and lettered east-west streets, makes navigation easy.

With four major freeways -- Interstates 5 and 80, U.S. 50, and Route 99 -- it's fairly easy to bypass city driving when heading for attractions outside the downtown area

Public Transport

An integrated bus and light rail system, operated by the Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT), makes getting around downtown and the suburbs quick and efficient. An exact fare of $1.75 is required to board buses and trains. Transfers are 25 cents and are good for 2 hours of travel. In the center city, fares are only $1 from 9 am to 3:30 pm and after 6 pm on weekdays, and all day on weekends and holidays. (916-321-2877)

Light Rail: RT light rail operates two lines with 48 stations in the eastern and northeastern portions of Sacramento. Trains run from about 4:30 AM until 1 AM seven days a week.

Bus: RT operates about 120 bus routes. Transfers are 25 cents. Request a transfer when boarding the bus.

Taxi: Downtown, cabs can be found at taxi stands; they will rarely stop if you hail them on the street. You can also call a cab for dispatch. Try Yellow Cab of Sacramento (916-444-2222).

Airport

(SMF) Sacramento International Airport is 12 miles northwest of downtown.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Sacramento:

Always check if your hotel offers free transportation from the airport.

Bus: The YOLOBUS loop service runs between 5:41 AM and 10:15 PM. Cost for the 20-minute trip is only $1.50. (530-666-2877)

Shuttle: Door-to-door van service is offered by SuperShuttle. Fares to downtown are $14 for one person, $22 for two people, and $30 for three people. Vans are found in front of the Restaurant Building. (800-258-3826)

Taxi: Taxis costs $2.80 for the first mile and $2.20 for each additional mile. Expect to pay about $25 to $30 to reach downtown; credit cards are accepted. Up to four passengers may share a cab without being charged extra. Taxis can be found at the Restaurant Building and the Commuter Building.
