Sacramento, the capital of California, is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States. The city began at Sutter's Fort, the first European settlement in the Sacramento area. Sacramento's growth really took flight with the discovery of gold nearby in 1848. Since then, Sacramento has become a flourishing metropolis with a lofty skyline. Yet Sacramento is also known as the "City of Trees", with many parks and colorful autumns.

Begin your tour of Sacramento at the State Capitol. A working museum and home of the state legislature, the capitol's restored interior is lavishly decorated with marble mosaic floors, crystal chandeliers, and a monumental staircase. The surrounding grounds, graced with one of the country's oldest arboretums, enhance the capitol building's magnificence.
The city's origins are preserved at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park. The fort's living history program offers demonstrations of everyday life in the 1840s. Nearby, the State Indian Museum showcases the art and artifacts of 400 years of native Northern California cultures. The museum has an excellent collection of native baskets, an introductory video, and interactive exhibits.
Stroll the cobblestone streets and wooden sidewalks of Old Sacramento State Historic Park along the riverfront. Along with many historic buildings, including the Hastings Building, western terminus of the Pony Express, and the Eagle Theatre, the park is the site of the exceptional California State Railroad Museum. Thought of as the finest such museum in the country, it has a huge display of vintage locomotives, rail cars and memorabilia; excursions are offered during summer. Other sights in the Old Sacramento historic district include the California Military Museum, the Discovery Museum Gold Rush History Center, and the Delta King riverboat.
The Crocker Art Museum, established in 1885, houses drawings and paintings by the Old Masters, early and contemporary California art, and international ceramics, all in an impressive Victorian Italianate structure. Opulence is also on view at the Governor's Mansion State Historic Park. This Victorian mansion, dating from 1877, was the residence of California's governors until 1967. Other interesting stops include the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts, the Towe Auto Museum, and the Wells Fargo History Museum.
Stop by the Sacramento Zoo to visit the jaguars, hornbills, chimpanzees and other rare and endangered species. The zoo is located in William Land Park, where you'll also find playgrounds, picnic areas, and a children's amusement park. Children will also enjoy the interactive science and nature exhibits at the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center. The museum's inside exhibits include a planetarium and Challenger Learning Center, while a 14-acre wildlife area beckons outside.
Concerts by the philharmonic orchestra and other artists may be seen at the Community Center Theater in the Sacramento Convention Center. Sports fans can take in action on the hard court at Arco Arena, home of the Kings of the NBA and the Monarchs of the WNBA. The Oakland A's triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats play Pacific Coast League baseball at Raley Field on the west side of the river.
Cool times under the hot sun can be found at Raging Waters, a waterpark with 25 slides, rides and attractions found on the grounds of the California State Expo.
