There are plenty of nightlife options available in California's capital, from jazz to blues to heavy metal to hot salsa. One of Sacramento's swankiest nightclubs, Harlow's is an art-deco dream. Harlow's books bands playing everything from alternative to rumba to reggae to 80s new wave. The Monkey Bar is another hot "see and be seen" bar. This 50s-lounge-meets-the-space-age nightspot is almost always crowded, but an attentive bar and wait staff will see that you are well taken care of. At Cantina Del Rio, in Old Sacramento, summers are enlivened with live music on Saturday nights, but every night offers the temptation of their 50 varieties of tequila served in an Old Mexico atmosphere. Elegantly furnished Savanna's Lounge in the Red Lion Hotel is legendary for its Sunday jazz sessions called, appropriately, the Sunday Evening Jazz Sessions.
Rock & roll fans can take their pick of venues in and around Sacramento. Indy rockers top the bill at Old Ironsides, which also features a dance lounge spinning Brit rock tunes on Tuesdays. Yager's, a fixture in Folsom, is a great place to catch live music including reggae on Sundays and the blues jam on Mondays. Also in the northeast suburbs, the Boardwalk books alt rockers Thursday through Saturday, and local bands play Friday and Saturday nights at Roseville's Owl Club, touted as the "friendliest bar" in the Sacramento area.
For a change of pace, check out either the Punch Line or Laughs Unlimited for stand-up from headliners touring the national comedy circuit.
