Founded in 1777, San Jose is the oldest incorporated city in California. It is proud of its downtown rose gardens, Alum Rock Park, and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, which has a children's playground, a puppet theater, a steamboat model, and a tree house.
Children and adults are fascinated by the Winchester Mystery House where wealthy Mrs. Winchester was told by a medium that as long as she kept adding to her mansion she would not die. A crew of carpenters kept hammering for 38 years.
The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum displays an extensive collection of Egyptian and Oriental antiquities, including scarabs and a replica of an Egyptian tomb. The San Jose Heritage Historical Museum has a collection of original and replica structures to re-create an air of early San Jose. Visit the Japanese Friendship Garden, the San Jose Rose Garden, and Overfelt Gardens. Nearby wineries offer free tastings.
