The Mission San Juan Bautista was the 15th California mission established by the Franciscans during the colonization period. The small town that grew on the mission plaza became an important stop on the route between Northern and Southern California. As many as 10 stagecoaches a day delivered passengers to the Plaza Hotel after its opening in 1859. The town was spared the rigors of modern development when the railroad passed it by in favor of another route.
The town plaza is preserved as the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park which includes the Plaza Hotel, Plaza Stable, Castro/Breen House, and Zanetta House. You can also visit the original mission which has been an active Catholic church since 1812 and is not part of the park.
