This Gold Rush-era town was named after the Mexican town many of its first settlers came from. Sonora continues to prosper as an agricultural and lumbering center and as the county seat of Tuolumne County. The many stately Victorian mansions attest to the town's success during the Gold Rush. You can see artifacts from the glory days at both Bradford Street Park and the Tuolumne County Museum and History Center, housed in the 1857 jail.
Nearby, the Columbia State Historic Park preserves the entire gold-rush town of Columbia as it existed 150 years ago. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown maintains working steam trains on the site of the original repair shops of the Sierra Railroad.
