The "port city" of California's Central Valley, Stockton sits at the headwaters of a large river delta, a former marsh that has been drained and its waters diverted for agricultural and human use as far south as Los Angeles. Stockton is also a major shipping center for ocean-going cargo.

The home of several institutions of higher learning, including the University of the Pacific, and blessed with a pleasant Mediterranean climate, Stockton offers visitors a surprising amount of activity both in the city and in nearby areas. The city's prime cultural attraction, the Haggin Museum has numerous works by American landscape painter Albert Bierstadt in its European and American paintings and decorative arts collection. It also offers period rooms and artifacts in its historical exhibits.
North of the city, Micke Grove Regional Park is the home of both the five-acre Micke Grove Zoo, where you can see snow leopards, sea lions and lemurs, and the San Joaquin County Historical Museum. Among its many displays, the museum details the local invention of the "clamshell dredge" and other forms of heavy machinery used in clearing the area's marshlands.
In Louis Park, the youngest members of the family can ride the Pixie Express Train and Pixie Queen paddlewheeler, then meet their favorite storyland characters at Pixie Woods. The Children's Museum of Stockton also offers multiple environments where youngsters can play and learn.
Stockton's cultural offerings include ballet, opera and classical music. The Stockton Symphony is the state's third oldest orchestra. They perform at Atherton Auditorium on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College. For sports fans, Stockton has the Ports, Californa League affiliate of the Oakland A's, who play at Banner Island Ballpark, a downtown waterfront facility that opened in 2005. Nearby, another new waterfront facility, Stockton Arena hosts three professional teams: the ice-hockey playing Thunder of the ECHL, the California Cougars of the Major Indoor Soccer League, and the Lightning of Arena Football 2. With seating for 10,000, the arena opened at the end of 2005.
When its time to leave town, Stockton's location at the north edge of the Central Valley puts it within easy reach of many popular tourist destinations. Gold Rush towns, wine country, Yosemite National Park, Sacramento, and San Francisco are all within easy driving distance. The nearby stretches of the California Delta offer plenty of outdoor recreation and interesting islands and towns to visit, too. Lodi is known as the world's Zinfandel grape capital, and Locke is America's last surviving rural Chinatown.
