Car

Stockton is 45 miles south of Sacramento and 60 miles east of the San Francisco Bay Area. Interstate 5 and Highway 99 pass through Stockton north-south. To get to the government offices, banks, and waterfront of downtown Stockton, exit I-5 to Highway 4 running east-west between I-5 and Highway 99--called the Crosstown Freeway--and exit at downtown. Hammer Lane, Benjamin Holt Road, and March Lane are all east-west streets with exits off of I-5. These streets intersect with Pacific Avenue, Stockton's major commercial thoroughfare, which runs through the heart of the city. West Lane, another major north-south street, runs parallel to Pacific Avenue. Stockton has the usual rush hours, though traffic is not as severe as in larger cities.

Public Transport

Bus: The San Joaquin County Regional Transit District (SMART) offers bus service within the city of Stockton, as well as intercity and interregional service that connects with downtown Sacramento and San Francisco's BART system. The basic fare on SMART buses is $1.25; transfers are $0.25. SMART transfer points in Stockton are downtown at Channel and Sutter streets and the mall area. SMART buses provide service within the Stockton metropolitan area Monday through Friday from 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM; Saturday and Sunday from 7 AM. Express, intercity, intercity express, and interregional services operate Monday through Friday. For route information and schedules, call SMART at 209-943-1111 or 800-HOW-2-RIDE.

Taxi: The city regulates fares. Initial fare is $2.50 to get in and each mile is metered at $2. An option is Yellow Cab (209-465-5721).

Airport

As there is no passenger airport serving Stockton directly, most visitors fly into Sacramento International Airport (916-874-0700), San Francisco International Airport (650-876-2377), or Oakland International Airport (888-435-9625). From these airports you can drive a rental car to Stockton or travel via limousine service. Greyhound buses travel daily to Stockton from Sacramento, San Francisco, and Oakland (800-231-2222). Amtrak daily passenger train service is available between Stockton and San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and other cities (800-872-7245).
