Ventura's beautiful Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782, is now fully restored. Father Serra erected its first cross in 1782. The Albinger Archaeological Museum is next door; the Ventura County Museum of History and Art is across the street. Offshore from Ventura is Channel Islands National Park, eight islands forming a natural wonderland. The cliffs and beaches provide breeding and resting areas for sea birds, and the mountains and canyons provide refuge for rare species of wildlife.
