Hundreds of motels, hotels, and resorts are located in or around this town on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The lake itself, which is of glacial origin, is some 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. Paved highways circle it, providing access to nearly all of its 72-mile shoreline. There are a number of public beaches; El Dorado County Campground and Zephyr Cove Beach are two of the most popular. A bit commercialized, these large sandy beaches include in their list of amenities parasail and jet-ski rentals and snack bars. There are wonderful shops and restaurants in town, and fishing and boating facilities are abundant. The mountains make this region a year-round vacation area, and numerous ski resorts are popular during the winter. Large paddleboats that carry up to 500 people give tours and night cruises with dinner and dancing. Some beaches have no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk. Restrooms are on site.
