In the center of mellow Marin County, tour the sleek Marin County Civic Center, Frank Lloyd Wright's last major project. A Farmer's Market every Thursday and Sunday morning in its parking lot features local produce and arts and crafts. The reconstructed 1817 Mission San Rafael has a small museum.
To the east, along the San Francisco Bay, enjoy hiking, biking, and picnicking at China Camp State Park, the site of a late-19th-century Chinese fishing village. Nine miles north, in Novato, see displays on Miwok prehistory and culture at the Marin Museum of the American Indian. "Over the hill" in rural West Marin, you'll find lots of charming B&Bs, excellent restaurants, art galleries, and oyster farms. Enjoy sunning, swimming, and beachcombing at Stinson Beach and see nesting egrets and herons at Audubon Canyon Ranch.
