Although it has been a city only since 1956, Fremont has enjoyed a long history as a mission town, supply center for gold miners, movie making location, and health resort. Mission San Jose is a fine restoration of the original built in 1809. The chapel is dazzling with its beautifully restored paintings, chandeliers, and ornate gold-leaf altar. A small museum incudes artifacts from the Ohlone Indians.
Fremont's Central Park surrounding Lake Elizabeth has swimming, sailing, and fishing opportunities. At nearby Coyote Hills Regional Park, you can follow the boardwalk into the marsh for extraordinary bird watching, explore 2,400-year-old Indian shell mounds, and see the recreated Indian village. You can also visit Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
