Nestled next to Monterey at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula, this little village has a lovely collection of Victorian B&Bs and a three-mile stretch of coastline that makes for wonderful strolling, tidepooling, and diving. Otters cavort in the waves and Monarch butterflies make this their winter home. Here is an entrance to the famed 17-Mile Drive to Carmel, past exclusive homes, wind-sculpted Monterey cypresses, and seven world-class golf courses. You can learn more about the butterflies and other local wildlife at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. You might also want to climb the spiral staircase of the Point Pinos Lighhouse; the living quarters will give you an idea of how lighthousekeepers lived here in the late 19th century. Marine Gardens Park and Asilomar State Beach are fine places to explore the wonders of the shore.
