Set in the sunny heart of California's Central Valley, Modesto is within striking distance of Yosemite National Park, Sierra National Forest, California gold country, and San Francisco. The city itself is an underrated destination with plenty of outdoor recreation possibilities, particularly water skiing, river rafting, fishing, swimming, and boating. The weather here, especially in summer, is pretty ideal for just kicking it outside.
You can catch the Modesto A's (the single-A affiliate of the Oakland A's) at John Thurman field, or get in some golfing at any of the city's three public courses and several driving ranges. The Modesto Skate Park offers 13,000 square feet of surface for skateboarders and inline skaters.
There are two zoos in the area, at Micke Grove Park in Lodi and Applegate Park in Merced. A number of amusement parks also provide diversion, including Funworks Family Fun Co. (209-578-4FUN), Laser Quest (209-526-0000), Roller King (209-521-6816), and Tilt (209-524-7816).
For the real local flavor, stroll through any of the public parks, or cruise down around 9th & 10th Streets, the area that inspired former resident George Lucas to make "American Graffiti." The Lucas Plaza Statue (at the five-point intersection of Downey, 17th Street, McHenry Avenue, J Street, and Needham Avenue) commemorates the film by depicting two teenagers leaning against a '57 Chevy.
Tour the McHenry Mansion (209-577-5344), do some antiquing, or hit some of the fresh produce markets. Modesto also has a thriving indie rock scene, out of which the band Grandaddy has risen to prominence. It truly is a town with much to explore and discover.
