The seat of Montezuma County is a commercial center for the surrounding ranch area and the gateway to Mesa Verde National Park. For a period of 800 years, this area was the home of the Anasazi people; dozens of archaeological sites are scattered throughout the rugged buttes and mesas. To the west, you'll find the Lowry Pueblo Ruins and the scattered sites of Hovenweep National Monument, straddling the Colorado/Utah stateline. To the north, at Dolores, you can visit the Anasazi Heritage Center, which features hands-on archaeological exhibits, and the Escalante Ruins Historical Site. The Four Corners Monument, which marks the only place where the corners of four states meet, is about 35 miles to the southwest.
