Explore the arts and crafts shops in this historic mining town's Victorian downtown, or enjoy an abundance of outdoor adventures. Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which winds through the rugged San Juan region to Silverton, on a nine-hour excursion over tracks that are both a historic and a national civil engineering landmark. Stay overnight at one of Silverton's historic Victorian hotels. Trimble Hot Springs is just north of Durango. Enjoy hiking, boating, fishing, swimming, mountain biking, picnicking, and saddle and pack trips in the San Juan National Forest, and trout fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on the Animas River. Purgatory Ski Resort, 25 miles north, has outstanding skiing and scenery. In summer, ride the alpine slide and chair lift, go horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking or fishing, or take a jeep ride. There are some great whitewater rafting opportunities in Durango as well.
