Named for the Army post which once stood here as protection for the Overland Trail, this town on the Cache la Poudre River is the home of Colorado State University, a noted research center. Outdoor recreation can be found throughout the area. There is fine trout fishing at Horsetooth Reservoir, Lory State Park has camping and boating facilities, and the huge Roosevelt National Forest is to the west. At the Fort Collins Museum, you can see two authentic pioneer cabins and a pioneer schoolhouse. Avery House (1879) contains original furnishings of the Avery family who occupied the home for over 80 years. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery offers tours and a chance to see the Clydesdale horse team.
