Once the Territorial Capital and a rival to Denver as the state's most important city, Golden is best known today for its gigantic Coors Brewery. While brewery tours are the most popular tourist activity, railroad enthusiasts should head straight to the narrow-gauge trains, steam locomotives, and other historic equipment at the Colorado Railroad Museum.
Golden is also home to the prestigious Colorado School of Mines and its excellent Geology Museum. You can also tour the National Earthquake Information Center on the school's campus. Overlooking the town and the plains rolling off to the east, Buffalo Bill's grave sits atop Lookout Mountain. The museum next to the gravesite has exhibits about the frontiersman's life and artifacts of the Old West.
