Settled in 1870 as an agricultural colony, Greeley was founded on utopian principles of religious conviction, communal farming, and teatotalism. It did not abandon its temperance ways for nearly one hundred years. The city's founder, Nathan Meeker, a close associate of Horace Greeley, named the town for the newspaperman who said, "Go West, young man and grow with the country." Greeley today is the home of the University of Northern Colorado and the Independence Stampede, an eight-day celebration with rodeos, parades, and fireworks. You can visit the Centennial Village, a collection of historic buildings and shops, and the two-story adobe home of Nathan Meeker which contains many original furnishings from the late 19th century.
