Situated in the broad Gunnison River Valley, with the surrounding rivers and mountains providing a wealth of recreational opportunities, Gunnison is a center of tourism, ranching, and education. Long renowned as one of the finest places in the nation to do battle with trout, the Gunnison area contains the clear waters of Lake San Cristobal and the Blue Mesa and Taylor Park reservoirs. It is the gateway to Curecanti National Recreation Area and the Gunnison National Forest. Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a new national park here.
At the Gunnison Pioneer Museum, you can visit several historic buildings including two schoolhouses, railroad station, and post office. To the north, you'll find exceptional skiing at Crested Butte.
