High up in the Rocky Mountains in the northwest corner of the state, Steamboat is rich in authentic Western atmosphere and ski history, and the slopes are incomparable. This was the first area in the state to develop downhill ski trails, and today is a favorite training ground of the U.S. Olympic ski team. There are two ski areas, Steamboat and Howelsen Hill, which is a renowned ski-jumping facility. Also enjoy cross-country skiing, telemarking, snowmobiling, sledding, sleigh rides, night skiing, hot-air ballooning, dogsledding, ice skating and backcountry skiing at Rabbit Ears Pass. In summer, enjoy first-class tennis, golf, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, backpacking, hunting and fishing in the Routt National Forest and Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area, and rafting on the North Platte River. Then stop and soak at Strawberry Hot Springs or the municipal pool. There are many guest ranches in the area. Nearby Fish Creek Falls drops a breathtaking 283 feet.
