Crested Butte, a former mining town, is a laid-back and friendly place with a lot of outdoor fun to be had. The entire town is a National Historic District, full of interesting things to see as you go from place to place. Crested Butte Ski Resort offers downhill, cross-country, and telemark skiing. Other activities include ice skating, horseback riding, dog mushing, snowmobiling, snowcat powder skiing, and hot-air ballooning. Mount Crested Butte and Gunnison National Forest have great snowboarding and ice fishing in winter, and in summer, you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping. The Mountain Bike Hall of Fame is located in Crested Butte as well, and is a nice choice for visitors who like things a bit more off-the-beaten-path.
