Relax in one of the town's two hot springs spas or hike five miles on the Rainbow Trail, along the West Fork of the San Juan River northeast of town, to a natural hot spring. Enjoy golfing and fishing in the San Juan River and Echo Lake, one of the best places in the state for rainbow trout, yellow perch, and largemouth bass. Southwest of town, in the San Juan National Forest, is Chimney Rock, the only mountain home of the Anasazi. Make tour reservations through the Pagosa Springs Ranger Station. Enjoy cross-country skiing at Pagosa Pines Touring Center and downhill at Wolf Creek Pass Ski Area, which has the most snow and best powder in the state. Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park, five miles south of town, is a natural habitat zoo of native animals.
