This commercial and industrial center was once "Hat Capital of the World." The Danbury Museum & Historical Society, a complex of several buildings, contains exhibits on the hatmaking industry at the John Dodd Hat Shop (1790), early furnishings at the John and Mary Rider House (1785), the vocal studio of Pulitzer-Prize winner Marian Anderson, and other displays on local history. Danbury was also the home of the great, early 20th-century composer, Charles Ives. His birthplace is open by appointment. The Charles Ives Center for the Arts presents musical concerts at its outdoor amphitheater on the campus of Western Connecticut State University. You can see vintage rail cars and locomotives and a restored 1903 Union station at the Danbury Railway Museum, and tanks, jeeps, and other military equipment at the Military Museum of Southern New England.
