With more than 500 houses dating from the Colonial to the Victorian age and a lovely village green, Guilford is one of Connecticut's oldest and most attractive towns. You can visit the Henry Whitfield State Museum in the house built by the town's founder in 1639; it is said to be the oldest stone building in New England. Two classic saltbox houses, Hyland House (ca. 1660), with rare Colonial furnishings, and the Thomas Griswold House (ca. 1774), with a blacksmith shop and garden, are also open for tours. You'll find works of fine arts and crafts exhibited at the Mill Gallery of the Guilford Handcraft Center.
