This charming hillside town of well-preserved colonial buildings surrounded by well-heeled country estates is said to be the first town to have renamed itself (in 1779) in honor of the first President. For a flavor of the area's colonial past, visit the Gunn Memorial Library & Museum in the 1781 Simeon-Mitchell House where, in addition to period furnishings and decorations, you'll find an unusual thimble collection. The area's longer cultural past is explored at the Institute for American Indian Studies. You'll find art and artifacts dating back 10,000 years, a simulated archaeological site, recreated native village, longhouse, contemporary Native American artworks, and other exhibits.
