This old Delaware Bay town has been a home for ship pilots for some 300 years. The richly ornamented Zwaanendael Museum was built in 1931 to honor early Dutch colonists. Restored buildings in Lewes include Burton-Ingram House, Cannonball House Marine Museum, 1884 Coast Guard boat house, Thompson Country Store, a blacksmith shop, and Old Doctor's Office. East of town on the ocean, Cape Henlopen State Park offers swimming, fishing, camping, and a nature center. Nature lovers will also enjoy Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge to the north. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry connects Delaware with the southern tip of New Jersey; the 17-mile trip across Delaware Bay takes about 70 minutes. You can also cruise on dolphin- and whale-watching trips or on the tall ship Jolly Roger0 .
