During "A Day in Old New Castle," the third Saturday in May, guests are welcome in many of the gracious old homes in this town. The central green was planned by Peter Stuyvesant, the one-legged governor of the Dutch New Netherlands colony. The Old New Castle Court House, Delaware's Colonial capitol and first state house, is now a museum. Amstel House Museum, once the home of Delaware's seventh governor, has been restored and houses Colonial arts and furnishings. The Dutch House, believed to be the oldest home in the state, has authentic furnishings and household equipment of Dutch settlers. The Strand, a block-long cobbled street near the Delaware River, has several fine old houses, notably George Read II House, a Georgian mansion furnished with antiques; formal boxwood gardens date to 1847. See the Ticket Office of the New Castle-Frenchtown Railroad, the nation's second-oldest line. Although the 1832 office is not open, you can see a section of restored track with wooden rails attached to stone ties by iron straps. Battery Park has a riverwalk.
