This historic town took its romantic name from the Indian word for "friendly people on the other side" (of the river). Nearby Apalachicola Bay is famous for its oyster beds. Take a drive to St. George Island, a good place for swimming and fishing. St. George Island State Park offers miles of undeveloped beaches, dunes, marshes, and forest. North of town is the Apalachicola National Forest, with sparkling lakes and three rivers. Camping, swimming, fishing, and boating are all popular. Also visit the Apalachiola National Estuarine Research Reserve and St. Vincent Island National Wildlife Refuge.
