This island-town along the Big Bend of Florida's gulf coast was once a base for Confederate blockade runners. Later, the railroad made lumbering and seafood the town's main exports. Today, it has become an artists and writers colony offering seaside tranquility, excellent fishing, and a growing aquaculture industry. Stop by the Cedar Key State Museum State Park for historical dioramas, an impressive shell collection, exhibits on Timucuan Indians, and old photographs of Cedar Key. Off shore, Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge, accessible only by boat, plays host to 200,000 nesting migratory and sea birds.
