Renowned for its Mediterranean architecture, lush tropical vegetation, upscale shops and restaurants, and immaculately landscaped streets, Coral Gables was born in the 1920s as one of Florida's first planned communities. The elaborate Venetian Pool, a public swimming facility built in 1924, has become emblematic of the city's design aesthetic and recreational outlook. The city is also the home of the University of Miami, where, at the Lowe Art Museum, you'll find works from 20th-century America, the European Renaissance, Latin America, and the Southwest. On the waterfront, you can explore Matheson Hammock Park, a man-made atoll with nature trails, bathhouse, and picnic grounds. Adjacent to the park, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, an 83-acre botanical garden, offers a tropical rainforest among other exhibits. Other landmarks of the city include the grand Biltmore Hotel, City Hall, the Alhambra Water Tower, and the Coral Gables Merrick House Museum, boyhood home of the city's developer.
