In the late 19th century, Henry A. DeLand, a New York manufacturer, dreamed of establishing here an "Athens of Florida." He planted oaks, which now shade the streets, and encouraged construction of a schoolhouse, which eventually became Stetson University. Visitors to the campus can see DeLand Hall, William E. Holler Memorial Fountain, Gillespie Museum of Minerals, and Duncan Art Gallery. Also in town is the Cultural Arts Center. Nearby are Hontoon Island State Park, an island in the St. Johns River accessible only by ferry or private boat; De Leon Springs State Recreation Area; Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge; Spring Garden Ranch stables; and Blue Spring State Park, with a historic house, hiking trails, and water sports.
