Florida's first resort town looks much as it did a century ago when the annual tourist invasion began moving farther south. Victorian homes and businesses line the streets of the 50-block historic district, lending a laidback charm that makes Fernandina Beach, the only city on Amelia Island, a pleasant and low-key Florida getaway. A standout among the city's landmarks is the Palace Saloon, reputedly the oldest tavern in the state. At the north end of the island, you can visit Fort Clinch State Park, the site of a Civil War-era fort and several interesting natural habitats. Swimming, camping, surfing, and nature trails are all available. The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in early May celebrates the island's historic past and its seafood-rich present.
